Brazilian Hardwood Cladding Guide: What to Know Before You Buy

Brazilian hardwoods deliver the longest-lasting, most beautiful exterior cladding on the market. This guide covers the three species iLumber stocks — Ipe, Cumaru, and Garapa — and how to choose between them.

    Why Brazilian Hardwoods for Cladding

Brazilian tropical hardwoods are dense, naturally oily, and packed with extractives that resist rot, insects, UV, and fire without chemical treatment. They are the benchmark premium cladding material for architects who specify on a 30-to-50-year horizon.

    • Density: 55–69 lbs/ft³ — heavier than water
    • Class A fire rating on Ipe and Cumaru
    • Natural Class 1 durability per EN 350

    Installation & Fasteners

Use stainless-steel trim-head screws (304 for inland, 316 for coastal). Pre-drill end-grain. Ventilate the back of every board with furring strips. Seal cut ends with end-grain sealer to prevent checking.

    What to Expect Long-Term

Left untreated, Brazilian hardwoods weather to a silver patina without losing structural integrity. UV-protective oil annually preserves the original color.
