Thermo Ash Decking Guide: Cost, Durability, and Maintenance

Thermo Ash is the domestic alternative to tropical hardwood decking — Class 1 durable, dimensionally stable, and grown sustainably in North America.

    Why Thermo Ash for Decking

    • Class 1 durability (25–30+ years)
    • Roughly 50% lighter than Ipe — easier to handle
    • Dimensionally stable thanks to thermal modification
    • FSC-eligible, EPD-published

    Cost

$14–$22 per SF installed — between Garapa and Cumaru. Materially cheaper than Ipe, slightly above premium composite, and ahead of both on lifecycle cost.

    Profiles

Available in grooved (hidden fastener) and S4S (face-screwed). Standard sizes 5/4x6.

    Install Notes

Pre-drill end-grain. Use 304 or 316 stainless trim-head screws — never galvanized. Maintain at least 1/4" gaps for drainage. Ventilate the substructure.

    Maintenance

Annual rinse. Optional UV-stabilized oil 1x/year to preserve crème-brûlée color, or let it weather to silver.
