A tropical hardwood deck needs less maintenance than almost any other deck material. Here's the right routine.
Once-a-Year Routine
- Clear leaves and debris between boards
- Wash with mild deck cleaner — soft bristle, with the grain
- Re-oil if you want to preserve the original color
- Inspect hidden fasteners and clips
Color Strategy
Two valid choices: oil annually to keep the rich brown, or do nothing and let the deck weather to a uniform silver. Both are aesthetic — neither affects the 30-to-75-year structural life.
Refinishing
Lightly sand to bare wood, brighten with oxalic acid, rinse, dry, then apply two coats of penetrating hardwood oil.
