One of ipe's greatest advantages is its minimal maintenance requirements. Unlike softwood decks that demand annual staining and sealing, ipe thrives with simple, periodic care. This guide covers everything you need to know about maintaining your ipe deck for decades of enjoyment.
Ipe Maintenance Overview
Ipe requires less maintenance than virtually any other natural wood decking material. The essential maintenance tasks are:
- Annual cleaning: Required — removes dirt and organic matter
- UV-protective oiling: Optional — maintains the rich brown color
- Fastener inspection: Annual — ensure structural integrity
That\'s it. No chemical treatments. No sealants. No staining. No painting.
Annual Cleaning
Clean your ipe deck once or twice per year to prevent buildup of dirt, pollen, and organic matter:
- Sweep the deck to remove loose debris
- Rinse with a garden hose
- Apply a hardwood deck cleaner or mild soap (dish soap works well)
- Scrub with a stiff bristle brush in the direction of the grain
- Rinse thoroughly
- Allow to dry completely before applying any oil
Avoid: Power washing at high pressure (above 1,200 PSI). While ipe can handle more pressure than softwood, excessive pressure can damage the surface fibers.
Oiling Your Ipe Deck
Oiling is optional and purely cosmetic. It maintains the original brown color and enhances the grain pattern. If you prefer the natural silver-gray patina, skip this step entirely.
When to oil:
- Once or twice per year (spring and/or fall)
- After cleaning and the deck is completely dry
- When the brown color begins to fade (if you want to maintain it)
Recommended oils:
- Penofin Hardwood Formula
- Ipe Oil (various manufacturers)
- Any penetrating oil designed for tropical hardwood
Application:
- Ensure the deck is clean and dry (48 hours after rain)
- Apply a thin coat with a brush, roller, or pump sprayer
- Work in manageable sections
- Wipe up any pooling — ipe\'s density means it absorbs slowly
- Allow 24–48 hours to dry before foot traffic

Dealing with Gray Weathering
If your ipe has weathered to gray and you want to restore the brown color:
- Clean the deck thoroughly with a hardwood cleaner
- Apply a wood brightener (oxalic acid-based) to restore the natural color
- Rinse and allow to dry
- Apply UV-protective oil within 48 hours
This process can bring back the original color even after years of weathering. The wood beneath the gray surface layer remains unchanged.
Stain and Scratch Removal
Ipe\'s hardness makes it highly resistant to scratches, but they can occur. Here\'s how to address them:
- Light scratches: Often blend in naturally over time with UV exposure
- Deeper scratches: Sand lightly with 80-grit sandpaper, then 120-grit, and re-oil the area
- Food/drink stains: Clean promptly with mild soap. Most stains will not penetrate ipe\'s dense grain.
- Rust stains: Use an oxalic acid cleaner. Prevent by using stainless steel fasteners and keeping metal furniture on protective pads.
Seasonal Maintenance Checklist
Spring:
- Sweep and clean the entire deck
- Inspect for any loose or raised fasteners
- Check for any boards that may need tightening
- Apply oil if desired
Fall:
- Remove all leaves and organic debris (prevents staining)
- Clean between boards to ensure drainage
- Apply second coat of oil if desired
- Store or cover outdoor furniture
Year-round:
- Clean up spills promptly
