Decking Material Calculator Guide: Estimate Boards, Cost & Waste

Accurate material estimation saves money and prevents project delays. This guide walks you through the calculation process for estimating decking materials, whether you are building with ipe hardwood, composite, or thermowood. We cover area calculations, waste factors, bundle conversions, and cost estimation.

Step 1: Calculate Your Deck Area

Measure the length and width of your planned deck in feet. Multiply to get total square footage.

Rectangular deck: Length × Width = Area (sq ft)

L-shaped deck: Break into two rectangles, calculate each, and add together.

    Example:

    • Main section: 20 ft × 14 ft = 280 sq ft
    • Extension: 10 ft × 8 ft = 80 sq ft
    • Total: 360 sq ft

    Step 2: Add Waste Factor

Every project generates waste from cuts, fitting around obstacles, and occasional defects. Standard waste factors:

    Deck ComplexityWaste Factor
    Simple rectangle (straight boards)+10%
    L-shape or with stairs+15%
    Diagonal pattern or complex shape+15–20%
Picture-frame border+15% (add border boards separately)

    Formula: Total Area × (1 + Waste%) = Material Needed

    Example: 360 sq ft × 1.10 = 396 sq ft of material

    Step 3: Convert to Bundles

Different products cover different areas per bundle:

ProductCoverage per BundleBundles for 396 sq ft
Ipe Wood Decking (1×6)15 sq ft27 bundles
Thermo Wood Ayous Cladding15 sq ft27 bundles
Natural Elegance Composite Slats21 sq ft19 bundles

Always round up to the nearest whole bundle.

    Step 4: Estimate Cost

Multiply your bundle count by the per-bundle price to get material cost. Then add substructure, fasteners, and labor.

Quick cost estimates per square foot (materials only):

    • Ipe decking: $14–$25/sq ft
    • Thermo wood cladding: $4–$8/sq ft
    • Composite slats: $5–$9/sq ft

For installed cost, add $8–$15/sq ft for substructure, fasteners, and professional labor.

    Tips for Accurate Estimation

    • Measure the actual joist layout, not just the finished deck dimensions
    • Account for stairs as a separate calculation — measure tread and riser areas individually
    • Add border/picture-frame boards separately from field boards
    • Order all material at once from the same production batch for color consistency
    • Keep 2–3 extra bundles for future repairs and touch-ups

    Using the iLumber Built-In Calculator

Every iLumber product page features a built-in material estimator that handles these calculations automatically. Enter your quantity, click the waste adjustment buttons (+10%, +15%, +20%), and the calculator rounds up to the nearest whole bundle with updated coverage totals.

This eliminates manual math and ensures you order the right amount every time.
